Artonot #21: Freaky Furniture, artistic?
Methinks this task calls for a carpenter… not a wannabe “artist” with nothing better to do… I’m just kidding. Carpentry is great, for those who care about it.

I don’t think these designs are the sort of thing that many peaple would consider having in their homes, but i think its good to push the boundaries of art and design and in that respect i think there great.
I’m sure there’s many ways of using sustainable unwanted wood [logs] for this kind of work without deliberatly cutting down a tree for it as i would imagine these are.
I am not sure what you think a carpenter is but I would define someone who is able to make an intricate piece of furniture out of wood, make it functional, original and stylistic is not just a carpenter but a good carpenter. I, being a carpenter, kindly ask whoever wrote the above statement to read up on furniture design, art history, maybe a dictionary, before they criticize the hard work of others. Criticizing someone as a “wannabe artist” is not only in and of itself an oxymoronic statement, it makes you sound un-intelligent or worse; a jack-ass. So please lets keep the art criticism intelligent and well articulated. Ok?

This site reminds me a lot of the “degenerate” art show held by Hitler in nazi Germany. The nazis had very strong feelings about what was art and what was not. Nazis criticized abstract expressionism, any non-representationalism, jewish art, in fact they really only liked german propaganda art that they didn’t have to think about too hard. The truth is, any time people think they have the rite to “objectively” JUDGE art they run the risk of trampling other’s personal freedom’s in the process. The best part about art as a field is that it is extremely subjective. When I say ” I don’t like Monet or Van Gough”, thats fine as long as I qualify my statement with “I dont like….” The difference between my statement and Hitler saying that he didn’t like abstract expressionism is that Hitler was saying that objectively. This website runs the risk of following a well established trail of anti-intellectual oppression of creative thought. If you don’t “get a piece of art” thats fine just move on to the next piece.
