Street Sign Art

Posted in art on May 30th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Just when I thought I had seen every kind of street art there is, signtologist of Denver comes up with yet another way of decorating trivial public property. It’s catchy, original, and it’s way easier on the eyes than a damn STOP SIGN (especially while driving). Only one question remains… is this truly bona fide art, or not? You be the judge.

The ART of Tennis, an Artonot original

Posted in art on May 28th, 2009 by admin – 6 Comments

an artist is you! or at least that seems to be the general consensus these days…

Inspired by all of the wannabe artists we’ve been discussing on the blog so far, I’ve decided to give this “creativity” thing a try myself, and here are the fruits of today’s labor. It’s amazing what you can accomplish on the tennis court, and I’m not just talking about serving some aces. With a few bum balls, nets, fences, and rackets as my tools, I am beginning my artistic career as a tennis ball sculptor!

I swear, some poor, hopeless, good for nothing (else) art student will look at this blog, get “inspired” and glue together a giant tennis ball sculpture, made from like a million balls. Then, some art “critic” will give it a raving review, and viola, you have yourself a new alternative arts movement… Thus, some bored idiot could change the course of art history, a little…

SO WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? AM I AN ARTIST YET???

This one reminds me of a frog:

A secret message hides in the fence, can you guess what it is???!!!

My tennis ball artistry probably has Michelangelo spinning in his grave… but then again, so does most modern painting, architecture, and sculpture.

Ok, I’m done here for now.

We’ve got some more artonot to discuss today. What do ya’ll think of this guy’s work? He uses mirrors in various climates and geographical locations to demonstrate something I can’t quite grasp… But are his little setups truly artistic? He also uses colored sticks to create some weird illusions in various landscapes, and those things really freak me out!

Cool street artistry in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Posted in art on May 26th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Walk down the right back alley in Ann Arbor, and you WILL shit brix!

Been living in this college town for the past 4 years, and now that school is out and there are no classes to worry about, I am beginning to realize that I may have missed out on seeing the best of this tiny town during my time here. The real local bars and eateries that college kids rarely hear of, much less wander into, the best kept secrets in underground music venues, and of course, the graffiti. Just a few hours ago, on my way to the train station, I wandered down an alleyway I must have passed by dozens of times while a student. Yet the thought of exploring this tiny little enclave never crossed my mind before. Well, today I did it, and below are some of the products of my breathtaking detour.

Would you like to share some cool art (or not) from your college town or perhaps your hometown?

Thanks!

Internet memes and macros

Are these at all artistic? This is a topic that has been bugging me for some time. Some of these can make you laugh and cry. Although not wholly original, the combination of text and pictures can result in really clever images that catch on around various internet subcultures like wildfire. Some of my favorites are shown below. What do you think? ART???

Does a pile of mediocre artistry shown together make true artwork?

Posted in art on May 19th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

This just in from the Telegraph newspaper. Saint Fabiola, the patron (or is it matron?) saint of battered women and her many faces. Nowadays, I hesitate to think that a whole pile of trash could ever really amount to anything more than garbage. When I was nine or ten years old, I had a collection of beer bottle caps. They were all interesting and unique in their design, representing many different ales from breweries all over. I had over forty different bottle caps in that collection and considered it my most priceless possession at the time. Yet when my parents decided to move, they had me throw them all out, saying it was all just useless garbage. I see many parallels between my experience with the bottle caps and the following news story:

Picture of a can of soup? Why not just use a camera? Wait a second, why do you need a picture of a soup can in the first place?
